yeah try the meta tags one, just go into your source code, copy and paste the meta tag into the code where Google tells you. I spent hours trying to use the html way and did it in 2 mins with the meta tags.

You should try using the meta tags a lot easier and a trained monkey could do this :). That should spead it up a bit

I think there is another problem here, not in the html verification file itself. Did you create custom errorpages on your webserver? There might be a problem with those, returning the wrong statusses.
