I know little about optimizing websites but to save cost I'm trying to do myself what i can. reading about goggles Webmaster tools i have started to use it but than it ask me to verify my site by adding a meta tag to the homepage. so i contact my developer and ask them to verify the site they said there will be a charge of £50. so i told them they should let me access to my website and i will do it on my own, they have given me my FTP login details and password. can someone explain me how to use this ? or should i let them do it for £50? Thanks for your help. but i dont know what a FTP is and how to get it and how to use it to add a Meta Tag.

This is ridiculous on your web developers part, its a job that will take under a minute and you shouldn't be charged £50. Its the sort of thing you shouldn't be charged for at all. The easiest way to do it is not to do it the meta tag way, instead google gives you the option to create a file and upload it, and this will save you touching the code for the site. Once you have the FTP details, go through the verification procedure in googles webmaster tools. It will tell you to create a file called xxx.html where xxx is a string of letters and numbers. Just open a test editor, add a space to the page and save as the filename google gave you. Upload this to the root of your website (where your homepage is), and thats all you need to do. Would also think about getting a new web developer who isn't going to charge an arm and a leg for doing tiny amounts of work!
